SC30 Test: Particle Size Analysis using Aqueous Dispersion SC31 Test: Particle Size Analysis using Water Miscible Dispersion SC32 Test: Particle Size Analysis using Water Immiscible Dispersion
Particle size analysis, or particle sizing, is undertaken at MCA Services with a Coulter LS instrument using the laser diffraction technique. This technique allows for the reliable and accurate acquisition of particle size distribution data in the particle size range 0.4 μm to 900 μm diameter. Furthermore, the analysis is undertaken continuously across this range, without the requirement of changing lens components which would otherwise limit the distribution range and cause discontinuous data. Results are generally emailed as PDF files to speed up transmission to the client. In addition, we offer assistance with interpretation of results at no extra charge.
Particle size distribution in the 0.4 to 900 micron diameter range The technique basically involves the dispersion of a sample in a liquid with which it is unreactive and insoluble. At MCA Services we have applied many alternative fluids to particle sizing, which maximises the choice of liquid media, ensuring compatibility with a wide variety of samples. The sample, suspended in the liquid media, is circulated through a lens whereby the diffraction of laser light passing through is measured to acquire the particle size distribution.
Resolution of bimodal particle size distribution Three tests are available at MCA Services for particle sizing and are distinguished according to the fluid used for sample dispersion. The SC30 test uses filtered water whereas the SC31 test uses a water miscible fluid suitable for the sample and a water immiscible fluid is applied to the SC32 test. Such changes are made to ensure that the sample being analysed is not soluble in the fluid. Samples provided as dry powders, dispersions and slurries may be applied to any of these techniques.
