Particle size measurement, or particle sizing, is undertaken at MCA Services using laser diffraction. This allows for the reliable and accurate acquisition of particle size distribution data continuously in the range 0.4 μm to 900 μm diameter without any discontinuity of data. Results are generally emailed to clients as PDF files. In addition, we offer assistance with interpretation of results at no extra charge.
Particle size measurement in the 0.4 to 900 micron diameter range Particle size analysis involves the dispersion of a sample in a liquid with which it is unreactive and insoluble. At MCA Services we have applied many different fluids to particle sizing, which ensures compatibility with a wide variety of samples. The sample, suspended in the liquid media, is circulated through a lens whereby the diffraction of laser light passing through is measured to acquire the particle size distribution.
Resolution of bimodal particle size distribution Three tests are available at MCA Services for particle sizing and are distinguished according to the fluid used for sample dispersion. The SC30 test uses filtered water whereas the SC31 test uses a water miscible fluid (for example alcohol) whereas a water immiscible fluid is applied to the SC32 test. Such changes are made to ensure that the sample being analysed is insoluble in the fluid. Samples provided as dry powders, dispersions and slurries may be applied to any of these techniques. The staff at MCA Services will be happy to discuss the technique and advise on the suitability of the test protocols available.
